Yes even our post office wouldn't upgrade my ruc because they claim they haven't been told... Though our local Vtnz knew all about it... Hmm

Just re-done ours, for another 5k. 2.5k unused from last lot. Tried local testing station ("you don't need to do this because it is a private vehicle"!!). Then to AA - (know nothing about it, but tried to ring NZTA whose phones were out of action most of day). Then to Post Office (know nothing about it, but we would't do it because we are only an agency and don't give refunds on behalf of anyone else.) Waited till next day - rang NZTA direct, explained to me that ALL agencies had received a memo detailing changes and ways to do it. Back to AA, and told them of my "discovery". Teller looked at the memo (she had already seen and signed it!) more carefully, then tried to put in the relevant details to her machine. Hey presto - it worked. First one she had done, but happy camper at least. Normally do it over internet, so presumably it should also work as well, and still be slightly cheaper "commission".

Sad isn't it. In order to stay legal you have to force people to take money off you when they really don't want to.

It's BOHICA time, folks. 3.5 goes from $68 to $72 per 1000Km on 1 July 2019. And there will be another one ('only 5.something %'....) on 1 July 2020. Same deal with the higher weights too (I'm not affected) - existing RUC's last for another month, then are null and void. Use 'em or lose 'em....but, hey, no new taxes.

Still, better comms this time around: got an email from NZTA giving links and explicit details.

I purchased 10,000km for the Jeep about a month ago. This will take me through to Feb - March next year. The reality is that another $40 for 10,000 km is not the end of the world. Even with road user the diesel Jeep is still about 50 % cheaper to run than a petrol equivalent and with all that low down torque makes a more relaxing and user friendly tow vehicle.
